SINCE COMING TO THE STATES in 1988, we never could find the type of tea room you’d find in London: not prim, not proper, not ultra-Victorian - just good tea in good china in a relaxed but cheery environment and a nice selection of cakes and the like to accommodate that which had been missing from our lives: an afternoon tea in the city, being amongst others out for the same: a rejuvenating break in the day to sit back, have a cuppa and reflect. Reflect upon what, you may ask? Being English of course.
WE GOT HOMESICK and had to travel back to the UK often in order to satisfy our afternoon cravings. This got very expensive and the jet lag affected us so profoundly that it was not uncommon to find us strolling through our neighbours' yards in the middle of the night, areel and in shambles, demanding more Devonshire cream and accusing bewildered opossums of hoarding "the good stuff."
ITS BEEN TWENTY YEARS NOW since we stepped off the boat and nineteen since we reached dry land. As a service to a) ourselves, b) an imagined clientele, and c) the opossum community, we decided just stay put and do it ourselves, adjoined to our furniture shop, English Living. We’re proud of the result and we can’t wait to have you in to share the experience with us.
TRUE TO OUR ORIGINAL VISION, we are not the height of primness. Lunch here is something to savour but casual nonetheless, and you should feel free to roll out of bed and get your morning boost with us (we're as proud of our espresso bar as we are of our extensive tea selection). That being said, if you're dressed to the nines, itching to show off that monocle or the latest in Victorian fashion, and are looking for an extravagant session with high tea in Burleigh china with fancy cakes and sandwiches, fret not: we are here for you, and the service will meet with your expectations.
We do have a strict No-Doily policy, however. We're confident you'll understand.
Sincerely,
The Management
